Moon Series: Orb 7

One of Chee Yong's Moon Series: Orb, this double-walled plate involves experimenting with ash glazes. Substituting part or all of real ash with synthetic ash in a glaze recipe is one method to address the problems of impurities, variability, and supply. In the many experiments with ash glazes, the artist mixes of the synthetic ash recipe with a local stoneware body to compare the results against actual wood ash glazes. When fired in reduction, the glazed body is transformed into a myriad of different patterns and textures, and each piece from the different glaze recipe and firing is totally unique. 

These sculptural works are delightful conversational pieces. They hold their presence whether standing alone or in multiples.
