Chew Seow Phuang

Chew Seow Phuang, a professional ceramic artist and veteran with more than 3 decades of experience in pottery, is known for his unique teaching method that helps students learn wheel-throwing in double quick time.

Chew is the Co-founder and Dean-Sifu of Clay-Street Studio, which started in 2002, now an established full-facility pottery studio that offers classes for pottery, sculpture, mosaic, and fusion arts. As a teacher, Chew generously imparts his knowledge and guidance in pottery art as deftly as he integrates his passion in the arts with years of experience. Prior to this, he was the Chairperson and lead instructor of the Ceramic Group at the Kampong Glam Community Club, which he had started in the mid-1990s.

Chew exhibits regularly in Singapore and overseas, most recently being, Eudaimonia – Contemporary Ceramic Expressions in January 2022. He also leads regular exploratory wood-firing expeditions overseas with his pottery fraternity and keen learners.

Chew sees the limitless possibilities of expression offered by clay and enjoys connecting people through collaborative clay work.

A gentle soul with calm temperament, Chew is most comfortable with his relaxed profile, whether working on his personal projects or in collaboration with others. He values quality interactions, meaningful engagements and finds joy in seeing others benefit from making a special connection with art. Being the big person he is, Chew derives a profound sense of personal accomplishment from helping others achieve this sense of wellbeing through the arts.
